Ungrateful Pakistan: time to stop the rest of the aid, too

A gesture, but nonetheless a welcome one from the US:

The US says it is withholding some $800m in military aid to Pakistan.

White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley told ABC television that Pakistan had “taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid”.

He said the US raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in May had affected ties but he insisted the relationship “must be made to work over time”.

The $800m (£500m) equates to about a third of the annual US security aid to Pakistan, US officials say.

In figures submitted to the International Monetary Fund last autumn, Pakistan’s defence expenditure in its 2010-2011 budget was put at $6.41bn – an increase of $1.27bn on the previous year. Read the rest of this entry »

Kuffar, Can You Spare a Dime?

Islam and poverty – why do Muslim countries lag so far behind in human and economic development?

To say that societies based on Islam have had trouble adapting economically would come as a surprise to no one; even the most ardent Islamic supremacists cannot help but notice that Muslims by and large prefer to live in non-Muslim countries.

With the Arab world continuing its slow spiral from autocracy into anarchy and theocracy, very few in the Western media have given much attention to the ever-present, grinding poverty that characterises the entire region with the exception of a few lucky sheiks who get their money pumped directly from the ground. Britain Appoints Envoy to ‘Muslim UN’

But you won’t read about this in the news in Britain, of course. More abject dhimmitude and Islamisation of policy from the Craven Coalition:

RIYADH: The British government has appointed Mohammed Shokat as the UK special envoy to the 57-member Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) (the ‘Muslim UN’) in a major bid to boost ties between the two.

The OIC and the UK have also announced plans to develop a joint framework of dialogue and cooperation in selected areas and evinced keen interest to hold regular consultations on issues of common concerns, said a British Embassy spokesman in Riyadh Sunday.

The move to promote relations with the OIC is significant for both sides as Islam is the second largest religion in Britain, with an estimated Muslim population of 2.5 million. Read the rest of this entry »

73% of Americans Oppose Aid to Pakistan – But Will Be Ignored

Political arrogance is the hallmark of the Obama presidency and it will be its undoing:

Nearly three in four Americans (73%) are opposed to sending foreign aid to Pakistan until it demonstrates a deeper commitment to the war against terrorism, an opinion poll here has revealed , even as senior Obama administration officials are making a qualified case for continuing assistance to a shifty ally.

In a clear sign that Washington is swimming against the tide of popular distaste for Pakistan, a Fox News poll released on Wednesday showed 73% of voters against aid to Islamabad, and only 19% saying US should continue funding. Read the rest of this entry »

Pakistan’s Crocodile Tears Over Drones

What's wrong with this picture? Protesters in Pakistan hold up placards protesting the highly sucessful use of drones by the Coalition to take out senior Taliban and al-Qaeda figures

When Imran Khan’s whining, you know it’s working:

PESHAWAR: Pakistan halted NATO supply shipments to Afghanistan on Saturday after thousands of protesters rallied on the main road to the border to demand Washington stop firing missiles against militants sheltering inside the country.

Police officer Khurshid Khan said supplies had been stopped until Monday morning because of the protest.

Much of the non-lethal supplies for foreign troops in landlocked Afghanistan come through Pakistan after arriving at the port in the southern city of Karachi. Militants often attack the convoys, and last September Pakistan closed the border for 20 days to protest a NATO helicopter strike inside its borders. Read the rest of this entry »
