VIENNA: Iran president wants to shed the nation’s secrecy and forge ahead openly with developing nuclear weapons but is opposed by the religious leadership, which is worried about international reaction to such a move, says an intelligence assessment shared with The Associated Press.

Until now intelligence reports had assessed Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as relatively moderate on the nuclear issue compared to the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But a blunt comment by Ahmadinejad last month on Iranian state TV that “if we want to make a bomb, we are not afraid of anybody” fits the scenario laid down by the intelligence assessment. Top Turban Ayatollah Mohammad Taghi Mesbah Yazdi, who claimed a couple of weeks ago that Iranian Pesident Mahmoud Amadinejad had been ‘bewitched, has now urged followers to continue suicide attacks against Israelis, including children.

Ayatollah Mohammad Taghi Mesbah, considered one of the Islamic Republic’s most radical clerics, issued a fatwa on his website declaring that suicide attacks are not only legitimate but are a must for every Muslim.

Ahmadinejad is behaving “unnaturally” and needs to be “saved,” said Yazdi, a former supporter of the president, in an interview with the weekly magazine ‘Shoma’ recently.

This passes for normal political dialogue in the country that the UN’s former nuclear watchdog-turned-Egyptian Islamist politico Mohamed ElBaradei, the US, European and other Western Governments have allowed to obtain nuclear weapons – and ones that are not too far away from being ready to strap onto missiles that can reach New York, let alone Tel Aviv.

Scared? You bet you should be.

Suspected Uranium enrichment plant, Iran

China on Tuesday played down a United Nations report that pointed to it as a trans-shipment point for banned missile technology and other illicit trade between North Korea and Iran.

The report, obtained by Reuters over the weekend, said North Korea appeared to have been exchanging ballistic missile technology and expertise with Iran in violation of Security Council sanctions. Read the rest of this entry »

The foreign secretary has condemned Tehran’s “completely unacceptable” behaviour after British Special Forces seized a shipment of suspected Iranian missiles intended for the Taliban.

The 48 rockets are understood to have been intercepted in Nimruz Province, in southern Afghanistan, on 5 February.

UK officials say technical analysis showed they had come from Iran.
