Horrific: Christian street-sweeper Abbas Massih lies dead after being stabbed by a muslim for refusing to obey an order

The often unseen or unrecognised Christian persecution and abuses at Pakistan’s lowest level of society have come into sharp focus, with the tragic tale of a street sweeper.

While one Christian sanitation worker in Lahore has been suspended and criminal charges filed against him for objecting to discrimination against fellow workers, another was killed the same month for not tending to a shopkeeper’s command fast enough.

Anayat Masih Sahotra, who has worked as a street sweeper for Lahore’s Solid Waste Management (SWM) department for 24 years, said he is facing baseless charges of forgery and fraud from his employers because of his work as a labor leader for area sweepers, who are nearly all Christians. The brain-dead are up in arms again – and we’re not talking about Qur’an burning pastor Terry Jones:

The kind of simple-minded, ‘me-too’ mentality that feels the need to post on Twitter’s ‘trending topics’ meme-of-the-moment timelines has gleefully rounded on Terry Jones, the US Pastor, who leads the fundamentalist Dove World Outreach Center in Florida – who finally delivered on his promise to publicly burn a Qur’an in protest at the undeniable fact that:

“…….parts of the Koran, if taken literally, do lead to violence and terrorist activities, do promote racism or prejudice against minorities, against Christians, against women,” he said shortly after the Koran burning.

Using Jones’ protest as their cue – and incensed by the usual whipping-up of violent fervour by Islamic clerics, Muslims in Afghanistan went on the rampage in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. A total of fourteen people were killed, including some of the protesters themselves, three UN workers and four Nepalese guards. Read the rest of this entry »

Way past time to send Kasab to paradise

Lone surviving Pakistani gunman Ajmal Amir Kasab, who is facing the death sentence for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has moved the Bombay High Court against the capital punishment.

The appeal against the death sentence was made before the High Court on Tuesday by Kasab’s lawyer Amin Solkar, reports said on Wednesday.

The defence lawyers have raised questions over the evidence used in the trial, the identification parade and the validity of the confessional statement among others. The hearing on the appeal will commence on 18th October. Read the rest of this entry »

Taking the fall? Iraqi Christians praying at Johannes Church in Sodertalje, Sweden

This report from the BBC’s ‘From our Own Correspondent’ series, looks at the Swedish Government’s recent deportation of Iraqis from Sweden. What seems unusual about the current wave of deportations is the the subjects are Assyrian Christians, possibly the most endangered Iraqis of all:

Although Sweden once led the way in welcoming Iraqi refugees, the authorities are now clamping down and Iraqi asylum seekers are increasingly faced with deportation.
