UK University Heads Say They ‘Can Do Little’ About Islamic Extremism on Campus

Islamic fundamentalism is being allowed to flourish at universities, endangering national security, MPs and peers said yesterday.
Academics are turning a blind eye to radicals because they do not want to spy on students, a report claimed.
Despite “damning evidence” of a serious problem, little progress had been made in tackling the unsustainable situation, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Homeland Security said.
They urged the Government to tackle the issue on campuses with “utmost urgency”.
Such extremism “endangers our security at home and has international implications that are serious enough to threaten our alliance relationships”, said the group, which includes the former home secretary Lord Reid.
Secret files obtained by The Daily Telegraph and WikiLeaks disclosed this week that at least 35 terrorists held at Guantánamo Bay were indoctrinated by extremists in Britain.The leaked documents, written by senior US military commanders, illustrated how Britain effectively became a crucible of terrorism over the course of two decades. The government’s counterterrorism watchdog believes Britain’s universities are reluctant to deal with radicalisation on campus and says a report by vice-chancellors that rejects demands to ban controversial speakers is “weak”.
Lord Carlile, who is in charge of overseeing the government’s counterterrorism strategy, Prevent, urges ministers to develop a “new narrative” for combating extremism, supporting moderate Muslim theologians against al-Qaeda. “You have to meet like with like,” he says.
He is scathing about the conclusion reached by Universities UK, representing 133 universities – and says their report contains a “glaring omission”. He told the Guardian: “[There] is a total failure to deal with how to identify and handle individuals who might be suspected of radicalising or being radicalised whilst within the university.” Read the rest of this entry »

A stark warning that Israel cannot rely on the support of European leaders in the battle against the deligitimisation and demonisation of the Jewish state was issued this week by Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor.
At a packed meeting at London’s New West End Synagogue, the envoy warned: “When push comes to shove, no-one in Israel really thinks that Europe will come to its aid.”
He lambasted politicians who felt they were taking a sufficiently principled stand by simply stating that Israel had “a right to exist.” If he had found it necessary to state that Britain has a right to exist ,”people would wonder what I had been drinking?” he declared. We almost fell off our chairs this morning when we saw this (h/t Pamela):
Ladies and Gentlemen, we present the American élite – Princeton University students, protesting about their latest cause celèbre, er, hummus; purportedly made by Israelis (but which actually isn’t).
In scenes redolent of the ‘takeover’ of a supermarket by lefty British charity ‘War on Want’ in London earlier this year (except there at least the girls were prettier), these campus Jihadists, programmed by their left-wing professors and the proliferation of Islamist money that slushes around Western universities, manage to betray their complete ignorance of the Israel/Palestine situation and make themselves look stupid at the same time.
Yet what is even more cringe-worthy (and believe us, you will cringe) than this embarrassing demonstration of ignorance, racism and ugliness – is the irony. Oh, the sweet, delicious, eye-watering irony..
The irony of the fact that in any Sharia state, not only would these young women not even be allowed on the streets without covering themselves, but they would be likely, as ‘out’ homosexuals, to face summary public execution.
Furthermore, the only Middle East state where they could behave in this way without fear of retribution, is…wait for it.. Israel.
Embarrassing. Anyway, we’re off to stock up on some more tasty Sabra Hummus. Happy Saturday.
