RIYADH: The husband of a Sri Lankan housemaid working in Riyadh says that his wife has been a victim of sexual assault by at least one male member of the family she has been working for in the Kingdom.

He also claims she was being pimped “house to house” as a prostitute and her proceeds were taken from her.

The 30-year-old woman from Panadura district near Colombo came to the Kingdom on Aug. 29, 2009 to work in a Saudi household. The husband of the woman, Kamal, claims he went to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) about three months after his wife began working in Saudi Arabia to complain that she was being sexually assaulted by a son in the family. Risky business: would-be maids from Indonesia waiting to be photographed for ID cards

Despite constant efforts to cover it up – media spin in both Saudi Arabia and Indonesia reassuring would-be domestic workers that everything is OK – it clearly isn’t. More degenerate violence from psychotic Saudi ‘sponsors’:

MAKKAH: A 29-year-old Indonesian maid is currently in intensive care after jumping from the third floor of a building while trying to run away from her sponsor’s home in the Al-Kakiya district of Makkah.

The woman is thought to have fractured some bones and suffered internal bleeding. According to police, the maid had been with her sponsor for three months and was trying to escape to work illegally elsewhere.

Such incidents are usually accompanied by swift reassurances that these are Isolated Incidents™. But in reality they are rife. In just one year alone in the past decade, at least 2,800 Sri Lankan housemaids ran away from their Saudi sponsors, claiming they had been overworked, sexually abused or physically mistreated by jealous wives.

They are among the countless foreign ‘guest workers’ in Saudi Arabia, many of whom who endure conditions that are cannot be described as anything other than modern-day slavery.

Sumiati Salan Mustapa's appalling injuries

RIYADH: The lawyer assigned by the Human Rights Commission (HRC) to represent an Indonesian maid who was allegedly tortured by her sponsor in Madinah said there are suspicions that she might have inflicted some of her injuries on herself to blackmail her employer.

“The 53-year-old Saudi woman was recently widowed and inherited a large sum of wealth, which the maid knows about,” said lawyer Sultan bin Zahim, adding that the maid, Sumiati Salan Mustapa, is to be examined to determine her mental state. Read the rest of this entry »
