JERUSALEM – Palestinian gunmen opened fire Tuesday on an Israeli car in the West Bank and killed four passengers on the eve of a new round of Mideast peace talks in Washington. The Islamic militant group Hamas claimed responsibility.

Assailants firing from a passing car riddled the vehicle with bullets as it traveled near Hebron — a volatile city that has been a flash point of violence in the past. France’s First Lady is part of a campaign to save the life of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two.She is accused of cheating on her husband and then helping to kill him, and is now facing capital punishment for her crimes.

In Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan and other Muslim countries, Sharia is the law

A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals in the country whether they could damage a man’s spinal cord as punishment after he was convicted of attacking another man with a cleaver and paralyzing him, the brother of the victim said Thursday.

Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralyzed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago. He asked a judge in northwestern Tabuk province to impose an equivalent punishment on his attacker under Islamic law, his brother Khaled al-Mutairi told The Associated Press by telephone from Saudi Arabia.

He said one of the hospitals, located in Tabuk, responded that it is possible to damage the spinal cord, but it added that the operation would have to be done at another more specialized facility. Saudi newspapers reported that a second hospital in the capital Riyadh declined, saying it could not inflict such harm.

Administrative offices of two of the hospitals and the court in Tabuk were closed for the Saudi weekend beginning Thursday and could not be reached for comment. Read the rest of this entry »

RoP peace activists prepare for meaningful dialogue with Israel

Israel Air Force fighter pilots destroyed a variety of carefully selected terrorist targets in Gaza overnight in retaliation for a spate of terror attacks on Jewish communities in the western Negev, including two mortars fired at Israel from the region earlier in the day, and two Kassam rockets fired Monday.

Two IDF soldiers were wounded in Tuesday morning’s mortar fire while troops carried out engineering tasks along the Gaza security fence. The Salah ad-Din Brigades military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) terrorist group subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.

Muslims whipped up into a violent Jihad fervour at the local mosque? Body counts and bloodthirsty Islamic killings on the increase? Sheep nervous? It can only be Ramadan, Islam’s ‘Holy’ Month, again:

Both peacekeepers and insurgents say fighting in Somalia is set to increase during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

A spokesman for the African Union peacekeeping force in Mogadishu, Major Ba-Hoku Barigye, says troops are preparing for a surge in attacks from militants over the next thirty days.

The prediction comes as authorities in Kenya say they have arrested dozens of non-Somalis over the last two months suspected of attempting to cross the border to join insurgent fighters. Hizbul Islam, one of the groups fighting AU forces and soldiers from the Somali transitional government, has vowed to step up its assaults during the holy month.

A militia group fighting the insurgents, Ahlu-Summa Wal-Jama, says it will increase its own attacks.

Ramadan begins Wednesday for Somalia’s mostly Sunni Muslims. Observers refrain from eating, drinking and sexual relations between daybreak and sunset.

And not only Somalia. Iraq, India, the Philippines and Thailand have already seen an increase in violence at the start of, or leading up to, Islam’s ‘holy’ month; and others will inevitably follow suit.

It happens every year. The highest and holiest point in the Islamic calendar hasn’t attracted the sardonic moniker of ‘Bombadan’ for nothing.
