Pakistan's terror links - the evidence just keeps piling up

Pakistan is incapable of prosecuting terror suspects, according to a US State Department report which reveals that three in four defendants are acquitted.

The report paints a damning portrait of the key United States ally in the war on terror and criticises Islamabad’s failure to outlaw militant Islamic terror groups which escape bans by changing their names.

Islamabad had not closed loopholes which allow criminal gangs to launder funds for terrorist groups and had yet to sufficiently improve its police investigation methods to collect better evidence from crime scenes.

Film footage of the scene of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s 2007 assassination in Rawalpindi being hosed down inspired claims of an official cover-up.

The report comes amid deteriorating relations between the two countries and continuing anger in India at the slow progress in Pakistan’s prosecution of a number of alleged terrorist leaders charged with plotting the 2008 Mumbai massacre. Six Americans were among the 166 victims.

The criticisms are contained in the State Department’s 2010 Country Reports on Terrorism, published last week.
It found that while Pakistan maintained it was committed to prosecuting those accused of terrorism, a study of its Anti-Terrorism Court’s rulings last year disclosed “that Pakistan remained plagued by an acquittal rate of approximately 75 per cent”, and a legal system “almost incapable of prosecuting suspected terrorists”.

You lie down with dogs – you get up with fleas – international Islamo-terror hub Pakistan continues its slide into failed statehood. Every part of its state apparatus is tainted with corruption and terror links.

But the US Administration may have known this much earlier had they been regular readers of this blog.

The Mavi Marmara, which had been scheduled to lead the second Gaza flotilla, will not participate in this year’s attempt to break Israel’s blockade of the strip “due to technical issues,” according to organisers.

“I want to make it clear why the Mavi Marmara is not sailing with the Gaza flotilla: The exact reason has nothing to do with the government or the state, it is exactly about the technical problems. The Israelis, unbelievably [Yes. - Ed], damaged our vessel, the Mavi Marmara [last year],” Bülent Yıldırım, head of the IHH nongovernmental organisation, which was organising the ship’s participation in the flotilla, told a press conference Friday at İHH headquarters in Istanbul.

The announcement comes one day after the Hürriyet Daily News reported that pressure from the Turkish government on the İHH to cancel its plans were creating divisions within the group. On Tuesday, the İHH told the Daily News that they were reconsidering their plans to send the flotilla, citing Syrian humanitarian issues as possibly necessitating a reprioritisation of İHH aid. Federal authorities announce the indictment of six people for allegedly plotting to raise money to attack Americans and others overseas to bolster the Pakistani Taliban.

One of the three arrested is picked up in L.A., while three others are believed to be at large in Pakistan.

In the first case since the death earlier this month of Osama bin Laden, federal authorities announced Saturday that they have indicted six individuals, including one in Los Angeles, in a conspiracy to raise money to “murder, maim and kidnap” Americans and others overseas as part of a plot to bolster the Pakistani Taliban. PESHAWAR: Pakistan halted NATO supply shipments to Afghanistan on Saturday after thousands of protesters rallied on the main road to the border to demand Washington stop firing missiles against militants sheltering inside the country.

Police officer Khurshid Khan said supplies had been stopped until Monday morning because of the protest.

Much of the non-lethal supplies for foreign troops in landlocked Afghanistan come through Pakistan after arriving at the port in the southern city of Karachi. Militants often attack the convoys, and last September Pakistan closed the border for 20 days to protest a NATO helicopter strike inside its borders. Read the rest of this entry »

Goldstone-branded souvenir goods on sale in Gaza. What will the owner do now that even Goldstone himself has disowned his report?

Notoriously one-sided and uncritical of the tissue of lies and libels fed to him and his committee by the Palestinians and uncritical left-leaning ‘human rights’ organisations, it painted a wholly false picture of (as usual) the evil Israelis oppressing the poor Palestinians.

Like the fabrication, lies and Taqiyya of the Gaza flotilla incident that was to follow, it was comprised mainly of Muslims proclaiming breathlessly about supposed atrocities committed by Israel, NGOs backing them up – and credulous, story-hungry journalists taking down every word.

The Islamo-Left/mainstream media echo chamber then ensured this was propagated around the world as ‘what really happened’.

And now that Goldstone himself has admitted that his report really was, as we put it in our own Goldstone follow-up article, the ‘Fruit of the PoisUN Tree’, Mr Abu Dia must surely be pondering the fate of his remaindered Richard Goldstone range.
