Scene of the blast in Mogadishu this morning

A truck bomb killed at least 70 people at government buildings in the heart of Somalia’s capital on Tuesday, an ambulance worker said, and al Shabaab insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack.

Witnesses said there was a loud blast at a compound housing four government ministries in the K4 (Kilometer 4) area of the capital Mogadishu, where students had gathered on Tuesday to take exams.

“We have carried 70 dead bodies and over 50 injured people,” ambulance coordinator Ali Muse told Reuters. “Some are still lying there. Most of the people have burns.” Read the rest of this entry »

In the land of Youssou N'Dour and the Dakar Rally, there's no mistaking who's in charge

Africa is Islamising and radicalising rapidly – right under the nose of the rest of the world. Many ‘isolated incidents’ are steadily and predictably coalescing into a full-blown African Jihad:

Hundreds of Muslim protesters descended on a Jehovah’s Witness temple and a bar in a conservative Muslim neighbourhood of the Senegalese capital, setting the buildings on fire.

It was a rare instance of religious extremism in this normally moderate [there goes that word again - Ed] Islamic republic.

Thierno Mbeugne, spokesman for the local imam association, said the head imam in the conservative Yoff district of Dakar had asked the youth to march on Sunday against what they considered as ‘acts of aggression against their faith’. Read the rest of this entry »

Smiling Assassin: meet genocidal maniac and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir

The north of Sudan will reinforce its Islamic laws if the south secedes as a result of next month’s referendum, President Omar al-Bashir has said.

Mr Bashir said the constitution would then be changed, making Islam the only religion, Sharia the only law and Arabic the only official language.

Correspondents say his comments are likely to alarm thousands of non-Muslim southerners living in the north.

Genocide and slavery OK, lighting makeup for a male model and sharing the catwalk with women - er, not so OK...

A Sudanese court convicted seven men of indecency on Wednesday after police accused them of wearing makeup during a fashion show in Khartoum, their lawyer said.

The men, amateur models at the “Sudanese Next Top Model Fashion Show” in June, were arrested by the public order police, a body known for its crackdowns on perceived indecent dress and drinking in the Muslim north, one defendant told Reuters.

All seven were found guilty on Wednesday and each fined 200 Sudanese pounds, as was a woman who faced the same charge for applying the makeup, said lawyer Nabil Adib. Read the rest of this entry »

Video above from a report filed fifteen years ago, showing that the practice of Muslim slavery had never really gone away – and is now once again on the rise

From the people that pretty much invented it, the taking of slaves is happening again in the benighted, failed state of Sudan:

Nairobi — Officially, [the] slave trade ended 200 years ago after abolitionists in Britain and the US banned the oppressive enterprise. Before the end of that dark era, millions of Africans had been ferried across the Atlantic and sold into servitude across the Americas.

But history has a way of repeating itself, and it is doing just that in Sudan, where thousands of black Africans from the south are abducted and sold as slaves in the Arab north.

According to reports from non-governmental organisations and human rights agencies, a black slave goes for between $10 and $100 (Sh800 and Sh8,000), and various sources claim there are more than 10,000 people living in slavery and servitude in Sudan today, most of them abducted from their villages by government-backed Arab militia.
