But Kayhan (which means ‘Universe’ in English), the Iranian daily newspaper which acts as a mouthpiece for the country’s ultra conservative Islamic regime, has now accused 42-year-old Ms Bruni-Sarkozy of being a hypocrite.
An editorial in the paper points to her chequered love life, which has included numerous relationships with high-profile celebrities.

The Elysee Palace had no formal reaction to the slurs in the Iranian media, but an insider said Ms Bruni-Sarkozy was ‘deeply shocked’ by the personal attack.

In Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan and other Muslim countries, Sharia is the law

A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals in the country whether they could damage a man’s spinal cord as punishment after he was convicted of attacking another man with a cleaver and paralyzing him, the brother of the victim said Thursday.

Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralyzed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago. He asked a judge in northwestern Tabuk province to impose an equivalent punishment on his attacker under Islamic law, his brother Khaled al-Mutairi told The Associated Press by telephone from Saudi Arabia.

He said one of the hospitals, located in Tabuk, responded that it is possible to damage the spinal cord, but it added that the operation would have to be done at another more specialized facility. Saudi newspapers reported that a second hospital in the capital Riyadh declined, saying it could not inflict such harm.

Administrative offices of two of the hospitals and the court in Tabuk were closed for the Saudi weekend beginning Thursday and could not be reached for comment.

Saudi Arabia enforces strict Islamic law and occasionally doles out punishments based on the ancient legal code of an eye-for-an-eye. However, King Abdullah has been trying to clamp down on extremist ideology, including unauthorized clerics issuing odd religious decrees.

The query by the court, among the most unusual and extreme to have been made public in the kingdom, highlights the delicate attempt in Saudi Arabia to balance a push to modernize the country with interpretations of religious traditions that critics say are out of sync with a modern society.

The Saudi newspaper ‘Okaz’ identified the judge as Saoud bin Suleiman al-Youssef.

The brother said the judge asked at least two hospitals for a medical opinion on whether surgeons could render the attacker’s spinal cord nonfunctional. He and Saudi newspaper reports did not identify the attacker Khaled al-Mutairi, 27, said the assailant was sentenced to 14 months in prison for the attack that paralyzed his younger brother, but he was released after seven months in an amnesty. He said the attacker then got a job as a teacher in a university.

“We are asking for our legal right under Islamic law,” the brother said. “There is no better word than God’s word — an eye for an eye.”

He said he had a copy of the response from King Khaled Hospital in Tabuk province to the court’s request, saying the operation could be done.

A Saudi newspaper Okaz reported that a leading hospital in Riyadh — King Faisal Specialist Hospital — responded that it could not do the operation. It quoted a letter from the hospital saying “inflicting such harm is not possible,” apparently refusing on ethical grounds.

Islamic law applied in Saudi Arabia allows defendants to ask for a similar punishment for harms inflicted on them. Cutting off the hands of thieves, for example, is common. Under the law, the victim can receive a blood money to settle the case.

Human rights group say trials in Saudi Arabia fall far below international standards. They usually take place behind closed doors and without adequate legal representation.

Those who are sentenced to death are often not informed of the progress of legal proceedings against them or of the date of execution until the morning on which they are taken out and beheaded.

Crucifying the headless body in a public place is a way to set an example, according to the kingdom’s strict interpretation of Islam.

Amnesty International expressed concerns over the reports and said the rights group was contacting Saudi authorities for details.

“We are very concerned and we will appeal to the authorities not to carry out such a punishment,” said Lamri Chirouf, the group’s researcher on Saudi Arabia. Such measures are against international conventions against torture and international standards on human rights.

Chirouf said this was the first time Amnesty had heard of a punishment involving the damaging of a spinal cord.

“But it’s hard to follow details of the Saudi justice system. People are sentenced in closed trials with no access to the public and no lawyers,” he said.

According to Amnesty, in 2005, a convict in the kingdom had his teeth pulled out by a dentist because he had smashed another man’s teeth out in a fight.

“We have also had cases of people sentenced to blindness because they have caused the blindness of another person,” Chirouf said. “But never anything involving a spinal cord.”

At least 64 people, including an American, have been killed in twin blasts in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

Another 65 people were injured by the blasts, which police said went off at a rugby club and a restaurant as football fans watched the World Cup final.

“These bombs were definitely targeting World Cup crowds,” Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura said.

Somali militants have in the past threatened to attack Kampala; Ugandan troops are deployed in Mogadishu.

About 5,000 African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi are based in Mogadishu to protect the fragile interim government.

The Amisom force is engaged in frequent firefights with Islamist insurgents which control much of southern and central Somalia.

Obama ‘deeply saddened’
Insp General Kayihura said he believed Somalia’s militant group al-Shabab could be behind Sunday evening’s attack. If true, it would be the first time the group has carried out attacks outside Somalia.

In Mogadishu, an al-Shabab commander said he was “happy” with the attacks in Uganda.

But Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa refused to confirm or deny that al-Shabab was responsible.

In the rugby club, where the biggest crowd had gathered, the explosion occurred right in the middle of the crowd. People who were seated in the outer parts of the crowd were not affected as much as those seated in the middle.

The police are saying they tried to put in place as much security as they could, but it seems clear that the police had no clue about how the bombs got in those places.

Nobody expected this to happen in a World Cup final. One would have thought that whoever did this would have waited for another time. It is just a time when people are making merry and very excited about the World Cup final, then this happens. It is quite shocking.

He told AP news agency: “Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah’s anger be upon those who are against us.”

Insp General Kayihura, speaking at the scene of one blast, said: “The information we have indicates the people who have attacked the Ethiopian Village were probably targeting expatriates.”

US President Barack Obama said the explosions were “deplorable and cowardly”.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US would work with the Ugandan government “to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice”.

The US embassy in Kampala has confirmed that one American was among the dead.

“The nationalities of all the fatalities will be released later,” said police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba.

‘Screaming and running’
At least three Americans, members of a Church group from Pennsylvania, were wounded at the Ethiopian restaurant.

One, Kris Sledge, 18, said from his hospital bed: “I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running.”

Mr Sledge, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, who had a bandaged leg and burns on his face, told AP: “I love the place here, but I’m wondering why this happened and who did this. At this point we’re just glad to be alive.”

At the scenes of the two blasts chairs were overturned, and blood and pieces of flesh lay on the floor.

Zakariyya Mosque, Bolton, NW England - allegations of child beatings

It seems that some Imams are taking a radical new approach to faith-based learning activities for children – whether the kids like it or not:

AN investigation has been launched into allegations that children have been assaulted at one of Bolton’s oldest mosques.

Police, Bolton Council and the Charity Commission are looking into a number of claims about activities at the Zakariyya Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre in Peace Street, Daubhill — all of which were last night strenuously denied by trustees.

A letter sent to the trustees by the Charity Commission, which monitors the activities of charities, has confirmed one element of the investigation “involves allegations of abuse of children”.

A second strand of the investigation follows allegations relating to the internal workings of the mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre, which was established in 1967.

These include disputes surrounding the election procedures, the voting procedures and the removal of members.

Last night, a mosque committee member said: “There have been some allegations made to certain authorities and they are making inquiries.

“We are assisting the statutory authorities with their investigation. There is total denial on our part and we do not want to say anything that may jeopardise the inquiries.”

The news broke on the day that the mosque received a Marque of Excellence from the North West Multi-Faith Tourism Association.

The committee member said: “It is a shame that someone is trying to throw the spanner in the works when we get an award like this. A lot of people work very hard here.”

The letter, which was shown to The Bolton News, states: “We have received a complaint alleging that children had been assaulted…and that the charity fails to carry out CRB checks on all of its members who have contact with the children, including members of the Executive committee.”

Officials at the mosque have confirmed that the abuse allegations are of a physical, not sexual, nature.

The Bolton News understands they relate to children who attend the Madrassah Khaliliyyah Rashadiyya, which provides religious teachings to children after school.

The Zakariyya Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre was founded in 1967, about 10 years after Muslims started settling in Bolton.

Its current building, which cost £3 million and was funded entirely by the Muslim community of Bolton, was opened in 2005.

As well as being Bolton’s biggest mosque, with a capacity for up to 3,000 worshippers, it also acts as Jaame, or regional mosque, for the Greater Manchester and Lancashire area.

Greater Manchester Police, Bolton Council and the Charity Commission have all released individual statements confirming that they were investigating the claims.

A spokesman for GMP said: “Greater Manchester Police have received reports of an allegation of assault at a mosque in Bolton. Bolton public protection and investigation unit are currently investigating the complaint. Inquiries are ongoing.”

A Charity Commission spokesman said: “Concerns have been raised with the Charity Commission regarding the Islamic Cultural Centre Zakariyya Mosque Bolton.

“We have written to the charity trustees and opened an investigation in relation to the concerns raised.”

A spokesman for Bolton Council confirmed the authority had opened a joint inquiry with police but would not comment further.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. A UK search engine enquiry on ‘mosque child beating’, or similar, will reveal dozens of stories from around the country (and further afield), whereby children have been subjected to harsh physical punishment, usually in relation to the rote learning of the Qur’an.

Behold the immorality: A similar UNWRA-organised children's camp last year

About 20 men, some carrying assault rifles, tore up large plastic tents and burned storage facilities at the site, where tens of thousands of children are due to attend camp sessions, said Ibrahim Elewa, a private guard who was on duty when they struck.

Two days earlier, a previously unknown militant group, “The Free of the Homeland”, issued a statement criticising the camp’s organiser, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), for, “teaching schoolgirls fitness, dancing and immorality”.

Fundamentalist Muslims, or Salafis, whose agenda of global or holy war against the West is against Hamas’s nationalist goals, have stepped up attacks in the Gaza Strip over the past several months, targeting Hamas security men and offices.

“No doubt in my mind that it is vandalism linked to a certain degree of extremism. It is an attack on the happiness of children,” John Ging, UNRWA’s director of operations in Gaza, told reporters at the damaged camp.

Taher al-Nono, spokesman for Gaza’s Hamas government, condemned the attack “by a group of gunmen” and pledged authorities “will track down the perpetrators”.

Hip-Hop Concert
Last month, Hamas made its own move against what it viewed as immoral conduct, sending police to break up the Gaza Strip’s first major hip-hop concert. It said organisers failed to get a permit.

Ging pledged the summer camp, in which boys and girls will be separated in accordance with traditions and values in the religiously conservative territory, would be held as planned.

“The good news for children is and the good news for their parents is UNRWA will not be intimidated by such attacks,” Ging said, adding that Gaza’s youngsters “deserve to have a smile on their faces”.

Hamas wrested control of the Gaza Strip from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s secular Fatah movement in fighting in 2007.

The Gaza Strip is under an Israeli-led blockade and the West shuns Hamas over its refusal to recognise Israel, renounce violence and accept existing interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals.

Although we remain convinced that the UNWRA effort in Gaza has been successfully infiltrated and undermined by the Islamist extremists of Hamas, there is little doubt that the intention behind the summer camp was well-meaning; offering kids a break from the day-today life what has to be one of the world’s worst places to grow up – regardless of the viewpoint from which one approaches it.

Pity the children of Islam – particularly the girls – and shame on the Islamist men that hate (and fear) them.

Eight year-old Farzana recovers in hospital after poison attack on a girls' school last year

Just when you thought that the sexual insecurity, misogyny, cowardice, moral depravity and utter cruelty of radical Islamism had hit bottom – the Taliban just keep on digging:

KABUL – At least 12 female students were hospitalised in Afghanistan on Wednesday after inhaling a poisonous substance sprayed at a school in northern Afghanistan.

The 12 students of the Fatima Zahra Girl School, and a teacher and an assistant were mysteriously poisoned, Hamayon Khamush, director of the hospital in Kunduz city, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The Taliban’s strict form of fundamentalist Islam prohibits girls from attending school.

To defend their ideology, Taliban militants have attacked girl students with gas and acid.

In May last year 90 girls were hospitalised in Kapisa province, north-east of the capital, after someone sprayed toxic chemicals in the classroom.

A similar gas attack reportedly took place on Tuesday in Shina, a suburb of Kabul, where over a dozen girl students had to be sent to hospital after exhibiting symptoms of poisoning.

A 10-year-old Iraqi boy allegedly recruited by al-Qaeda was about to blow himself in a suicide attack on Wednesday just east of Fallujah when police spotted and arrested him, a senior officer said.

The incident occurred near a police checkpoint in Amariyat Al-Fallujah, a village 15km east of the former Sunni rebel bastion of Fallujah and due west of Baghdad, said Captain Anas al-Issawi.

“The 10-year-old boy had been used by al-Qaeda in the past to place bombs,” Issawi said, adding that the child disappeared from his family home in Amariyat Al-Fallujah four days ago.

“Three men aboard a van drove him to the isolated village of Shitsher (75km west of Baghdad) to prepare him for the suicide operation,” the officer said, quoting the boy’s own testimony.

On Wednesday morning the men helped the boy don an explosives-rigged vest under the traditional dishdasha (long robe) and drove him at dawn to the outskirts of Amariyat Al-Fallujah.

They instructed him to blow himself up as soon as the place began milling with people, the officer said, quoting the boy’s testimony.

“The boy said he followed the instructions and when he saw people gather he approached them (ready to blow himself up) but a policeman saw him and shouted for him to go away.

“He panicked and fled but we caught up with him and found that he was wearing an explosives vest,” the officer added.

The boy, whose identity was not revealed, gave the police information about the van which the al-Qaeda suspects drove and three of them were arrested, Issawi said.

The security situation in Fallujah, once a hotbed of Sunni insurgency, has improved dramatically although militants still carry out sporadic attacks.

Since 2006, Sunni tribesmen and former rebels have joined forces with the US military against Al-Qaeda, slashing the jihadists’ presence in the western region.

There is only one religion whose adherents stoop so low. Muslim terrorists regularly use children and the handicapped to deliver homicide bombs and place conventional explosives in Iraq and Afghanistan (they sometimes even buy them). We have also reported on their attempts to recruit children in Britain.

This disgraceful cowardly abuse of those vulnerable souls unable to resist them is, in our view, lower even than paedophilia – and the perpetrators deserve to be summarily taken out.

Yosma A., 40, mother of six and Kars resident, was mutilated by her husband and brother-in-law on Sunday.

The woman whose nose was cut off took shelter in her father’s home and filed a complaint against the abusers. A similar incident occurred in May 2009 in Ağrı, when a 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the stomach, her nose and ears cut off and was left for dead in a desolated area, following the decision of a “family council.”

Yosma A. and her husband Mirsevdi A., 43, who is also her relative, live in the Çığırgan village. The couple had an argument at noon on Sunday and Mirsevdi’s elder brother Recep A., 45, got involved in the fight. It was reported that the two brothers beat the woman and cut off her nose. Yosma ran away from the house and took shelter in her father’s house. Then, she went to the gendarmerie in the Kümbetli village where she filed a complaint against her abusers.

A gendarmerie officer took the woman to the Kars State Hospital where she received medical attention at the ER. In the hospital, Yosma A. reportedly said that she was also abused by the gendarmerie officer during the drive to the hospital. According to her claims, the gendarmerie officer hit her with his fist and threatened her to not file a complaint about her husband and brother-in-law.

“I was beaten by my husband and my brother-in-law. Just to make things worse I also was beaten by the gendarmerie officer as he threatened me. I filed a complaint against all of them. There is not safety for my life in this village,” – Yosma A., victim of Muslim violence

Eastern Turkey is, and always has been, a world away from the more developed and secular enclaves of the Western half of the country. But recent incidents of particularly sadistic Islamic violence leave us with the impression that the increasingly radical Islamist government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the AK Party is emboldening Islamists further towards ever more brutal violence.

 The appalling persecution of Egyptian Christians by Muslims, tolerated and facilitated by the Egyptian authorities, reached a new nadir this week:

 An Egyptian court in the southern city of Assuit acquitted this week four Muslims accused of killing 61-year-old Farouk Attallah on October 19, 2009. In broad daylight and in full view of witnesses, the killers fired 31 bullets to his head before beheading him, in the busy village market place of Attaleen, near Dairout, 313 kilometers south of Cairo. The dead body was then dragged in the street, accompanied by shouts of victory. Free Copts website published a video of the disfigured body (WARNING: extemely graphic and upsetting content).

The judge presiding over the court on February 22, said that he was not satisfied that the testimony of the witnesses established that the imprisoned men were the killers. After the acquittal of Mohamad, Ashraf, Osama and Ahmad Hassouna, there was jubilation in the court room, with shouts of ‘Allah is Great’ and congratulations from all Muslims, including members of the state security forces who were present.

Christians were enraged over the acquittal, since similar cases would result in life imprisonment or execution for a Copt if the victim was a Muslim.

The verdict came as another wake-up call to many Copts, according to Peter Sarwat, the plaintiff’s attorney. “It sends a clear message that Coptic blood is extremely cheap.” he told Mariam Ragy of Katiba Tibia Coptic site. “This acquittal will make permanent the present culture of impunity enjoyed by Muslim aggressors against Copts.”.

Sarwat said the ruling was inadequate, as it acquitted the accused but did not say who the perpetrators are. “If these men did not kill, so who killed? The ruling should have referred the case to the general prosecution to present the perpetrators.”

The Court based its ruling on quasi non existent proof, as well as the absence of “positive evidence” testimony versus the presence of “negative evidence” testimony. “The judge refused to take into consideration the testimonies of the dead man’s daughter who said she only saw one killer and not four, as well as the testimony of the Muslim man who was wounded in the shootings,” said Sarwat. According to media reports, most people who witnessed the shootings in the market place refused to come forward for fear of vengeance from the assailants’ family. There were false witnesses who confirmed that the killers were present at work.

“It is not enough to get a conviction based only on police reports which are full of legal loopholes and weak prosecution investigations,” said Sarwat. Legal observers have always claimed that the police purposely deliver to prosecution reports full of inadequacies and loopholes, thereby getting from the courts acquittals for Muslims.

What prompted the killing of Farouk Attallah was an alleged illicit sexual relationship between his son Romany and a local Muslim girl, Hagger Hassouna. A rumor that intimate photos of Hagger together with her lover Romany were circulating on cell phones in Dairout lead four members of the Hassona family to kill Romany’s father, after failing to locate his son, who had fled.

Besides the killing of Farouk Attallah, the arrest of the Hassouna perpetrators sparked on October 24, 2009, Muslim riots and collective punishment against all Copts in Dairout. Christian-owned shops, pharmacies, and homes were looted and burned (AINA 10-27-2009).

Although several hundreds Muslims participated in those riots, the police only detained 19, and these were acquitted on December 13, 2009 because of the lack of eyewitnesses and conflicting statements between the accused and the victims.

The majority of Copts believe the reason for the acquittal of Muslims is that although Egypt claims to be a secular state, in reality it applies the Sharia law which dictates .that a Muslim who kills a non-Muslim must not be killed, because it is not reasonable to equate a Muslim with a “polytheist” (a Christian).

Commenting on the acquittal, Dr. Naguib Gobraeel, President of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights, said: “What is the solution? The same happened with regards to Al-Kosheh Massacre [21 Copts were slaughtered in 2000 and not one Muslim was indicted], the attack on the Copts in Alexandria were blamed on a mentally unstable person; even the assailant who beheaded Abdo Goerge Younan in Menoufiah is now in a mental hospital [AINA 9-21-2009]. Heavenly Justice is our last resourt.” He stated that he will appeal this week’s verdict.

The victim’s family was greatly shocked and saddened by the acquittal. “In spite of the blood of their slain family head filling the street, the Muslim killers got away literally with murder,” Sarwat said “It just shows how cheap Coptic blood can be.”

Sarwat asserted that he will appeal the ruling. “We cannot remain silent over this verdict as it has very serious implications for all Copts in Egypt.” He added: “It is not safe for Copts now, as any Muslims who wants to get rid of a Copt, would kill him, knowing well that in the end he will be acquitted.”
