Bangladesh Sex Attacks, Murders Dismissed as ‘Eve Teasing’

Bangladeshi women protesting acid attacks to mark International Women's Day earlier this year

The chattel status of women in Muslim-majority countries is once again highlighted in this disturbing report:

Aleya, 18, sustained burns to 70 per cent of her body and died after six days in intensive care, becoming one of dozens of teenage girls to be killed or have committed suicide in Bangladesh this year because of sexual harassment.

“A huge fire ball engulfed her and she was screaming, running around and trying to put out the fire, but she couldn’t — everything except her face was burned,” said Aleya’s aunt Rajia Begum, 40, who witnessed the attack.

“The man started asking her to marry him in April, she was dead by May 26. She was scared of him. We all were. When she told him she wouldn’t marry him, he said ‘I’ll make sure you don’t marry anyone else.’”

A string of teenage suicides, at least 22 this year, according to local rights group Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), and dozens of high-profile attacks on teenage girls have highlighted Bangladesh’s sexual bullying problem.

“Eve-teasing” – the south Asian term for sexual harassment – is an everyday reality in Bangladesh, but it also causes public outrage in a country that regards itself as more progressive than other Muslim nations such as Pakistan.

“We recently have seen a lot of eve-teasing and teenagers committing suicide, and the government is very aware of this,” Bangladesh’s Women and Children Affairs Minister Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said.

Bangladeshi teenage girls have no real protection from bullies or stalkers, and deep-rooted traditional attitudes mean violent crimes against women are easy to carry out and often go unpunished.

“The family and society together blame girls if they’re being harassed,” said lawyer Nina Goswami, who works with local rights group ASK.

“The family would tell the girl, ‘you laugh too much’. They would tell her to lower her head when she’s walking to school.”

“Some girls even chose suicide as they feel so unsafe. The parents don’t listen to their daughters. Instead they accuse her of being responsible for the harassment.”

Don't believe the hype

In the midst of a wave of high profile propaganda funded and spread in the West by Islamists and their apologists – with their absurdly false claims that women’s rights are intrinsic to the Religion of Peace™ – we will continue to expose them for the obvious lies they are.

You say: “Muhammad said that the rights of women are sacred” – we say: show us the evidence.

It is amazing that how much ignorance prevails in this article. Anything wrong happens in a muslim country you blame it on islam and muslims. Like no woman is harassed in other non muslim countries, no woman is killed. First of all i would like you to know that there are many other reasons for a crime other than “evil” islam. Bangladesh is a developing country and overburden with population and problems. Rape murder robbery happens here like any other developing or rich country. Sexual harassment also happens in a much greater rate in india which is predominantly a nonmuslim country. You seem to think that because its a muslim country thats why eve teasing occuring…but the reality is completely different. Most teenager or young men who harass women lead a very western style life. They listen to hindi music, do drugs and watch porn and then go to street to catch a victim. Women are told to keep quite about harassment this is true. But not because islam says so! Social pressure, social status, political influence plays much greater role. Besides there is a judicial and police system which is not very effective on this type of situation. But in recent days i think great progress are being made to aware the general public. More and more people are knowing about this because media is playing an important role to bring this problem in front of us. In case of acid throwing the reasons are mainly dowry(involving money) or revenge or refusing a love or marriage proposal by either the girl or by her family. There are many reasons. But saying only because of islam, this happens is not just ridiculous but also hilarious. So i have to say that if you try to justify all these crimes simply as islamic product then i’m afraid you are either lying or ignorant about islam and most importantly bangladesh. Oh and for your info bangladesh high court has given a ruling that all types of fatwa and punishments outside the judicial system are illegal a couple of days ago.

You are correct in your assertion that bad things happen to women (and indeed men) everywhere. However, Islam actually codifies women’s inferiority and defines and differentiates how they should be treated, compared to men.

But the numbers are on our side – bad things happen to women much more often in Islamic countries and communities – and Muslim men are encouraged to believe that unmarried (and in particularkuffar) women are fair game. Muslim countries rank among the lowest in the world for human development – often side by side with those of sub-Saharan Africa.

Honour killing, underage sex, sexual grooming of non-Muslim girls (Malak-ul-Yameen, Mu’ta, etc.) – in what other society does this type of systematic abuse of women occur in such numbers?

It’s not ‘ignorance’ when it’s true – show us where we’re lying – let’s see some proof, some numbers to accompany the usual apologist, ad hominem spin.

And yes, we are aware of the recent Bangladesh HC decision – admirable, but it will be dead in the water without enforcement – of which there will be little if any.

Honour killing and underage sex does happen. But not necessarily islam permits that. Media focuses more on these events because it is done by muslims but when it occurs in western society and by nonmuslims then it is simply a case of domestic violence. Whether or not islam oppresses or gives rights to women that is a theological debate and i’m not interested to debate with you right now. Muslim countries are poor and whenever they would denounce islam they will get rich- do you really believe this ridiculous idea? What about america’s massive debt? Unemployment? Decreasing lifestyle? But i’m not going to talk about that either. I’m trying to restrict my discussion around bangladesh. Despite seasonal flood, massive population and poverty Bangladesh is progressing. Foreign reserve is all time high. It is a democratic government and it is the largest sender of UN peacekeeping force. Crimes do happen here. Against men and women. We may not have world class police force or judicial system, but blaming islam for every crime is just wrong particularly in Bangladesh. I don’t necessarily think bangladesh is a muslim country. Because as you know muslims are commanded by god to offer 5 times prayer. Most of them don’t do that specially young generation from muslim family. I am a medical doctor by profession and i have to visit rural areas as a medical team. Acid throwing, eve tearsing, rape, violence against women does happen everyday in bangladesh but not necessarily because of religious people who are so islam lover that they hate women’s rights. There are wide range of reasons which i have stated earlier. Poverty, illiteracy, social stigma, Poor administration and weak local law enforcement are some of them. High court decision is certainly admirable- then why i see you don’t publicize that? As far as implementing the law is concern would you blame islam again and not the political party or the judicial system or the police force who are actually responsible to implement the law?

    To Fuad Hassan,

If the shoe fits the satan worshipping cult of Islam…….. This satanic cult promotes the abuse of women and children wherever it flourishes. Yes bad things happen in other countries to women and children also but the evil religion of Islam condones this disgusting behavior. It’s in your book read it – abuse, pedophilia, slavery, murder…. I could go on and on

  • Un:dhimmi says:

“and i’m not interested to debate with you right now.”

Because you know you will lose.

“Poverty, illiteracy, social stigma, Poor administration and weak local law enforcement”

Yes, sadly all common characteristics of Muslim-majority countries – not just Bangladesh.

All you need to know about Mohammad’s attitude is his quote:

“Hang your whip where your wife can see it”

  • M R Hasnat says:

To know about Islam & to debate on Islamic views it need to go to Quaran & Hadith. Beside this only to say something against Islam please don’t comment. I believe that no religion permits to humiliate women but Islam is the only religion which gives the women definite rights and duties. Can anyone show any religion other than Islam which gives the women definite rights? So please don’t attack Islam. I respect your religion and you must respect my religion which I learnt from Islamic scripture. You should attract the others by your behaviour not by scandalous comments towards other religions. I think in Islamic countries the quantity of AIDS patients are more less than other non Islamic (free sex) countries. If anybody respects Islamic rules properly he or she can not do any offense.

  • Un:dhimmi says:

Hmm… what rights are these? The right to be worth half a man in court? The right to be beaten or raped at will (even while underage)? The right to wear a sack? The right to be attacked and disfigured with acid?

As always from Islamists, howls of protests and claims of a peaceful and tolerant religion, but zero evidence.

Provide us with a list of these ‘rights’!
