Jerusalem Evictions: US, EU Line Up to Bash Israel Yet Again

Once again, the ‘International Community’ (such an insidious, Orwellian phrase) is falling over itself to berate Israel and hug those poor, oppressed ‘Palestinians’:

The United States and the European Union hit out Monday at Israel for evicting Palestinian families from east Jerusalem, warning that such moves endangered the Middle East peace process.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led the international condemnation, labelling the evictions “deeply regrettable” and “provocative” and accusing Israel of failing to live up to its international obligations under existing peace initiatives.

“I have said before that the eviction of families and demolition of homes in east Jerusalem is not in keeping with Israeli obligations,” Clinton told reporters at a Washington press conference alongside Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh.

“And I urge the government of Israel and municipal officials to refrain from such provocative actions.”

Club-wielding Israeli riot police evicted two Palestinian families from their homes in occupied east Jerusalem on Sunday, after which clashes erupted in the upmarket Arab district of Sheikh Jarrah.

The action followed a decision by Israel’s Supreme Court to order the eviction of the 53 Palestinians, including 19 minors.

The Swedish presidency of the European Union expressed “its serious concern about the continued and unacceptable evictions in east Jerusalem,” which it said were “illegal under international law.”

The strongly-worded EU statement issued in Brussels said the evictions “contravene repeated calls by the international community… to refrain from any provocative actions in east Jerusalem.”

They “confirm a worrying trend that runs counter to the creation of an atmosphere conducive toachieving a viable and credible solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians,” it said.

Clinton stressed the same point, saying both parties “have responsibilities to refrain from provocative actions that can block the path toward a comprehensive peace agreement.

“Unilateral actions taken by either party cannot be used to prejudge the outcome of negotiations. And they will not be recognised as changing the status quo.”

There was further condemnation from individual European countries.

French foreign office spokesman Romain Nadal branded the evictions “illegal with regard to international law” and said they were highly detrimental to the peace process.x

And Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said they jeopardised the stalled Middle East peace process.

The international community has repeatedly urged Israel to “refrain from such provocative acts towards Palestinians” as “this is undermining the prospects for resolving the issue of Jerusalem within the frame of a recognised two-state solution,” he said in a statement.

Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Six Day War and subsequently annexed it in a move the international community has not recognised.

Palestinians want east Jerusalem to be the capital of a future state that includes the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The Supreme Court ordered the evictions following an appeal by the Nahalat Shimon International settler group, which claimed Jewish settlers have title deeds for the properties, despite UN and Palestinian denials.

Sheikh Jarrah is one of the most sensitive neighbourhoods closest to the so-called Green Line separating east and west Jerusalem, with the fate of the city one of the thorniest issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A few facts: the tenants are being evicted via a valid Court Order because they simply stopped paying rent (we think they may have been advised to do so by political agitators). What would you expect to happen if you didn’t pay your rent or mortgage for a sustained period?

The most prolific Israel-bashers of this group, the British Government, claim on their disgracefully-anti Israel ‘Jerusalem Consulate General’ website that The ‘Sheihk Jarrah’ district (also known as Shimon HaTzadik – ‘Simon the Just’); is an ‘ancient Arab neighbourhood’.

In fact, as Judaism pre-dates substantially both Christianity and Islam (the latter by over two millennia), so does this area’s Jewish connection.

There is also a bigger picture here. A wider effort is underway by the Obama administration, Britain and the EU to deny the fact that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. The US and Britain have their Israeli diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv, but also a ‘Consulate General’ in Jerusalem which they treat as their de facto embassies for ‘Palestine’, a country that does not exist.

Why else would anyone open a ‘Consulate General’ only 34 miles (54 km) from their main Mission?

Furthermore, 66% of the population of what the anti-Israeli lobby refer to as ‘Occupied Jerusalem’ (and we do include the US, British and EU administrations in this category as their denigration of Israel is unanimously brazen these days), is in fact Jewish.

Although there is no doubting the fact that Arabs should have equal access, Israel has the right to build and maintain an orderly, legal property market in its own capital. The ‘International Community’, led by the self-aggrandising Hillary Clinton and the obsequious British Foreign Office, has no right to interfere.

We’d urge you to read it all – you are unlikely to encounter reasoned counter-argument on this matter anywhere else – especially not in the mainstream media.

Yes, the Jewish religion is old. Well done, have a biscuit.

Does this mean that they can settle on other people’s land?

    Yes or no?

  • Antony Hanley says:

Putting a country and a people in inverted commas does not stop them existing. If Palestine doesn’t exist, what exactly is the West Bank and Gaza? Is it Israel? Or does asking that question make me a Nazi Jew hater?

  • Un:dhimmi says:

Which ‘other people’s’ land are you referring to, if the Jews were there first?

Nice patronising tone you have there, by the way. Looks like we’ve got some students in..

  • Un:dhimmi says:

Not a Nazi Jew hater, no. But you are a Jew hater – just one of the many that euphemise it as ‘anti-zionism’, of course – which makes it alright, doesn’t it?

The correct name for the West Bank is Judea and Samaria, and it is the so-called Palestinians who are the occupiers. With regard to occupation of other peoples’ land, perhaps the Copts should have their own country, perhaps the Zoroastrians, perhaps the people of southern Sudan – in fact perhaps they should have their countries back. Should Turkey withdraw from its occupation of Anatolian Greece? I think the real reason that the Islamic world complains so bitterly against Israel is because Israel represents a movement of victims of Islamic imperialism to declare their independence. The Spanish won their country back in the 15th Century and many countries under the Ottoman yoke did so in the 19th. Israel demonstrates that the process is not yet at an end and that other subjugated peoples will inevitably rise up and throw off the shackles of their oppression.

  • [...] What does seem true however, is that the ‘Palestinian’ leaders seem hell-bent on escalating the ‘al-Aqsa’ claim’ into further intifada violence, in an attempt grab more territory in a city to which they have no real historical claim (despite what they and the dhimmi governments of the West, who site their ‘Palestinian’ or ‘Occupied Terrotories’ embassies in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel (more details on this in our commentary in this article).
