US intelligence officials have claimed that a prisoner released from Guantanamo Bay prison has emerged as the Taliban’s leader in southern Afghanistan.

Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, formerly Guantanamo prisoner No. 008, was among 13 Afghan prisoners released to the Afghan government in December 2007, according to the claims. Read the rest of this entry »

Radical Muslim preacher Abu Izzadeen has been returned to prison after breaching the terms of his release, BBC News understands.

Izzadeen, also knows as Omar Brooks, was released from prison in May after his four-and-a-half-year sentence for inciting terrorism was cut on appeal.

He was found guilty in 2008 of urging worshippers at a London mosque to fight US and British troops in Iran. Read the rest of this entry »

An Israeli soldier captured by Gaza-based militants more than three years ago is in good health, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said on Tuesday, adding that he hoped he would soon be freed.

“I believe (Gilad) Shalit is fine,” said Mubarak, whose intelligence chief Omar Suleiman has been mediating negotiations aimed at a securing prisoner exchange between Israel and the Palestinian militants holding the soldier.

“I hope the issue will end soon,” Mubarak told journalists after talks in Cairo with visiting Israeli President Shimon Peres. Read the rest of this entry »

Memorial to Mark 7/7 Muslim Bombings Unveiled in London

Dignitaries and the families of the victims of the 7 July 2005 London bombings are arriving in Hyde Park for the unveiling of a permanent memorial.

Fifty-two people died after suicide bombers detonated backpacks on board three Underground trains and a bus.

The Prince of Wales, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and London Mayor Boris Johnson are to attend the ceremony.

Relatives who have seen the 52, 3.5m (11.5ft) tall stainless steel pillars say they form a “fitting tribute”.
